Q: How is the Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series different from  the Stampede Application Acceleration Series?
A: While both of these solutions have similarities and a common base, the Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series specifically addresses the new network intrusive applications that use AJAX, SOA and XML technologies.

Q: You talk a lot about AJAX, what is AJAX?
A. AJAX is an acronym for Asynchronous Java And XML, and represents a group of various technologies and methodologies for developing new, highly interactive and user-centric Web applications. With AJAX technologies, the developer concentrates on providing a rich user interface for the end-user, and by exchanging data with the Web application server utilizing common XML (Extensible Markup Language) data.  AJAX is important because it allows developers to quickly and easily develop powerful new Web applications based upon common standards that are well documented and portable. The end result is applications that create a highly productive environment for the end-user.

Q: I'm confused about the various options for your Client Software.  Can you please explain which is right for my enterprise?
A. Stampede's latest innovation, Acceleration On-Demand, is Client Software that provides support for full bi-directional acceleration of all HTTP applications that utilize SSL, SOA, AJAX and XML technologies.  What makes Acceleration On-Demand unique is the ability for the Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series appliance to automatically inject the proper technology into the application  the first time it is accessed.  Software does not need to be distributed or installed on remote devices.  Our  standard Layer 7 HTTP/HTTPS client is technology that must be installed on the remote client, and provides all of the same acceleration features of our Acceleration On-Demand technology.  Finally, our advanced Layer 5 Winsock client provides caching, compression and TurboStreaming functionality for traditional TCP applications that utilize the Winsock interface.

Q: Can the Stampede Web 2.0 Performance  Series function as a one-sided solution with only the appliance installed at the data center?
A: Yes, but the full potential of bi-directional acceleration is not realized unless the client technology is also deployed.  A single-sided solution could be initially implemented, and then client technology and other acceleration options added at a later time.

Q: Why is a two-sided solution better for performance than a one-sided solution?
A. Two-sided acceleration solutions are better because they are not limited to only the technology that the browser supports. Browsers will allow data compression through standard Gzip technology, and HTTP data streams to the browser can be optimized. However, unless there is technology on both ends of the network, the optimization to and from the browser cannot be optimized.  In addition, a two-sided solution is required in order to support non-HTTP/HTTPS applications, and is the only implementation that can fully benefit mobile users as well; laptops, PDAs or even phones. The combination of hardware and software provides several key customer benefits; performance is maximized, initial investment is reduced, deployment can be done in stages, and upgrades or enhancements are more easily deployed.

Q: Do I need to make changes to my applications to use the Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series?
A:  No.  The Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series is totally transparent to your existing applications.

Q: Why is there a software and hardware option for XML acceleration?
A. Various enterprises have different requirements with regards to XML.  XML may be in limited use, or you are just starting to experiment with XML deployment.  The Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series makes it easy to match a solution to your needs.  Limited XML use can be addressed through a less expensive software option.  As the XML demands increase, the hardware option utilizes specifically designed parallel hardware for the most effective acceleration available.

Q: If AJAX is so great, why do I need the Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series?
A. While AJAX speeds up responsiveness and productivity at the client, it actually increases the burden on the Web servers and networks in several ways. First, with the interactive nature of these new applications, the clients are constantly "polling" the systems for data. This polling paradigm causes TCP sessions to constantly be created and then terminated, causing increased network traffic and burden on the servers to manage all of these connections.  As the use of AJAX increases the amount of XML data to be used, the servers are then burdened with schema validation and routing decisions based upon the data. The impact on the network is substantial as more XML data consumes more bandwidth. The Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series solves these problems by mitigating the effect AJAX and XML have on the network, as well as reducing the burden on Web servers by offloading many of the network related functions, as well as applying specialized hardware to the  tasks of processing the XML data.

Q: If you are optimizing and accelerating XML, doesn't that reduce or eliminate the inherent benefits of using XML?
A: No. The optimization is done transparently between the client and the Stampede Web 2.0 Performance Series appliance during the transfer of  the information across the network. Applications or services on either side will always see the complete XML request.
